Rikolto – Participatory Food Safety System (PFSS), Arusha (2025)
Strengthening City Market Food Safety & Inclusive Governance
Implementation Support Partner: Food Information Tanzania (FIT) worked with
Rikolto and the Arusha City PFSS Council to restore active governance, improve
food-safety compliance in city markets, and embed practical monitoring routines across stakeholders.
The collaboration focused on market inspections, hands-on mentoring for PFSS Teams/ToTs, gender-inclusive
participation, and lean digital tools for evidence-based oversight and reporting.
Key Contributions & Results
- Reactivated the PFSS Council and introduced a four-month workplan with clear follow-up routines.
- Coordinated internal market inspections (e.g., Kilombero, Soko Kuu, Samunge, Tengeru) and mock audits to close SOP gaps.
- Engaged 12 Trainers of Trainers (ToTs) and conducted on-site mentoring on hygiene, PPE, drainage & waste mapping.
- Launched mass awareness for World Food Safety Day and radio outreach to boost public risk communication.
- Deployed lean digital tools (e.g., Kobo-based forms) for checklists, attendance, and verification dashboards.
- Measured impact: core SOP compliance rose by ~30% between inspection cycles; independent monitoring in Sept 2025 verified
high pass rates (≥80%) across most assessed areas.
